Formed in early 1996 in Western Sydney by four like-minded friends, the Compadres were launched quietly, with no back patch’s and even less fanfare. Originally the club had no name, they were just four friends, three on Japanese bikes and one on a Harley who sought a deeper meaning to their lives – lives that had been touched by the almighty. As more people were drawn to their easy going yet almost ‘outlaw’ appearance, the consideration of a name was tossed about amongst the now ten members. “We had some really strange names on the table at one time,” said Bozzo, the now retired president and only original member that warranted lifetime membership status. “It did take a while, we wanted something that meant something to everyone – I can’t even remember who it was that came up with Compadres, all I can remember was he was a fan of some Texas hard rock band – he just thought Compadres said it all, A close friend or associate; a companion. You can’t have a closer friend than Jesus.”
So the latter part of 1996 saw a dozen members, each proudly wearing the top rocker and bottom rocker – the centre patch didn’t reach its final design until the end of ‘97. During this period and up to 2004, points in time the club was struggling to retain members, being a true Christian is harder than some think and quite a few came with good intentions, talked the talk but soon ceased to walk the walk – so either left or were shown the door. The club was restructured and re-launched for want of a better word (although to be honest it have never really ceased to exist), with the same top and bottom rocker but the original centre patch being slightly modified – the nails having distinctive pointed instead of flattened heads and the inclusion of the CMC and 1 GOD square. This was followed soon after with a chapter in Adelaide, and then Melbourne.
Where do we go from here? Only God knows, but one thing is for sure and that is we’re here to stay and to spread the good word.
Many thanks must go to Bob aka Bozzo (R.I.P.) who after much soul searching decided to pass on the snippets of information.
The Colours & What They Mean We have been asked why the cross and nails, so the following should explain that. The cross stems from Mark 8:34-36. 34:– And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35:- For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. 36:– For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? The nails stand for us being willing to take those nails and the pain/suffering that he felt in to our lives and use that suffering to lead others to him. As for the actual name, a Compadre is in correct translation, a god father but Mexicans, those in TX and other parts of the Southern U.S.A. etc also use it as friend, or a companion you can trust – our translation is the latter, and what better companion than our Lord Jesus Christ.
